چکیده

12.2 TERMINOLOGY Selectivity All Clinically effective antimicrobial agents exhibit selective toxicity towards the bacterium rather than the host. It is this characteristic that distinguishes antibiotics from disinfectants. The basis for selectivity will vary depending on the particular antibiotic. When selectivity is high the antibiotics are normally non toxic. However, even highly selective antibiotics can have side effects.

Phenotypic Identification and Antibiotic Susceptibility Pattern of AmpC beta-Lactamase Producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae Isolated from Urinary Tract Infections from a Tertiary Care Hospital of Rawalpindi, Pakistan

Introduction: This study is aimed to compare phenotypic test methods and determine antibiotic susceptibility pattern of AmpC beta-lactamase producing uropathogenic Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae in clinical isolates. Method: E. coli and K. pneumoniae were identified by standard microbiological procedures. Screening of AmpC beta-lactamase production was done by using cefoxitin disc (...

Results of antibiotic susceptibility testing do not influence clinical outcome in children with cystic fibrosis☆

INTRODUCTION Patients with CF experience pulmonary exacerbations. These are often initially empirically treated with intravenous antibiotics, with antibiotic choice refined after susceptibility testing. METHODS We completed a 5-year retrospective review of children attending the Paediatric CF Unit, Nottingham. The respiratory sampling, antibiotic prescribing and susceptibility testing guidanc...

Comparison of Disc Diffusion, Broth Microdilution and Modified Hodge Test Susceptibility Testing Of Escherichia coli Isolates to Beta-Lactam Antibiotics

ABSTRACT         Background and Objective: One of the main tasks of clinical microbiology laboratories is to determine antibiotic resistance profiles in common pathogens and ensure the selection of effective antibiotics for certain infections. The aim of this study was to compare the methods of disk diffusion, broth microdilution and modified Hodge test i...

Antibiotic resistance / susceptibility of 30 isolates of Bacillus anthracis isolated in Iran between 2007 and 2008

Thirty isolates of Bacillus anthracis recovered from animal carcasses, soil and human in different localities in Iran between 2007 and 2008. They were tested by standard disc diffusion susceptibility method for their resistant/ susceptibility to different kinds of antibiotics. According to American National Committee of Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS) guidelines all isolates were sensi...
